A stone at the entrance of Potter Field (shown in upper right photo) reads as follows:
'Enter with reverence and respect for the 3,912 souls who are buried in this five and one-half acres of ground. These nearly forgotten citizens of past history were, in their own way, responsible for the the building of the West. Do not desecrate their memory'.
The term 'Potter Field' or 'Potter's Fields' dates to Bibical times. It is mentioned in the Gospel of St. Matthew as a burial place for paupers or unknown persons in Jerusalem.
