Permelia King McCasland, one of Frazee's Pioneer women , died at Detroit Lakes Minn Thursday June 15 at 81 years old. Rites at Frazee local Baptist church by Rev Geo. Edwards on June 17. Sbe had lived last 2 years in Detroit lakes with Daughter Hattie McCasland in Summit Flats. She was born 14 September 1852 in Indiana and went to LeSueur County Minn in 1862, during the Indian uprising and returned to Indiana for a while. She married Thaddeus McCasland March 1878 and then moved to vicinity of Frazee. Thaddeus McCasland died in Frazee. Surviving her are her eight children, her brother F.M. King and 16 grandchildren and 2 great-grand children. Mrs P. McCasland was active in the Baptist Church and W.C.T.U. Interment in Woodmen Cemetery [sic] at Frazee.

He and his 23-year-old Indiana-born wife Nancy [maiden name unknown] King have in their household their Indiana-born children, 8-year-old Permelia, 5-year-old Francis M, 3-year-old William and 10-month old Emily J. Permelia and Francis have attended school in the past year.

In the 1870 US Federal Census for Vernon, Jackson, Indiana, 42-year-old Kentucky-born farmer John King has no real estate nor personal property of value listed. He and his 33-year-old Indiana-born wife Nancy [maiden name unknown] King have in their household their Indiana-born children, 17-year-old Pamella [Permelia], 15-year-old Francis, 14-year-old William, 3-year-old John R and 1-year-old Charles. Emily J. who should be about 9 or 10 years old is missing from the family and may be presumed to have died. The Kings are living near the Vance/McCasland household and Thaddeus McCasland will marry Permelia King after the death of his first wife, Mary A McConnell.

In the 1885 Minnesota State Census for Sharon, Le Sueur, Minnesota, 31-year-old Indiana-born Thaddeus McCastling [sic McCasland] and his 31-year-old Indiana-born wife Permellia [Permelia King] have in their household their Minnesota-born children, 6-year-old Clarence, 4-year-old Curtee, and 1-year-old Lilly. Living next door are Permelia's parents, 55-year-old Kentucky-born John and his 48-year-old Indiana-born wife Nancy [maiden name unknown] King and Permelia's siblings, 19-year-old Indiana-born John R and 9-year-old Myrtle.

In the 1900 US Federal Census for Hobart, Otter Tail, Minnesota, 46-year-old Indiana-born farmer Thaddeus and his 47-year-old Indiana-born second wife Permelia [King] McCaslandhave been married 22 years and have had nine children and eight are living. In their household are their Minnesota-born children, 16-year-old Lillie, 13-year-old N. George, 12-year-old E Harry [transcribed as E Henry], 9-year-old Hattie, 7-year-old A Jesse, and 5-year-old A Eva. Lillie has attended school 9 months of the past year, N. George, 7 months, and E Harvey, Hattie and A Jesse attended school 8 months of the past year.

In the 1905 Minnesota State Census for Walworth, Becker, Minnesota, 51-year-old Jaxon County-born [Jackson County, Indiana] farmer Thideus [Thaddeus] McCasland has lived in Minnesota for 30 years and in Becker County for six months. His 52-year-old Jaxon County-born [Jackson County, Indiana] wife Permelia [King] McCasland has lived in Minnesota for 30 years and in Becker County for five months. Their Le Seur County, Minnesota-born children 17-year-old Harry E, 14-year-old Hattie G, 12-year-old Jessie A and 10-year-old Eva have lived in Becker County for five months. Thaddeus' parents are recorded as being born in Ireland [they were born in Indiana]; Permelia's father was born in Kentucky and her mother in Indiana. The census taker has recorded the sex of everyone in this family incorrectly, all the males are listed as females and vice versa.

In the 1910 US Federal Census for Walworth, Becker, Minnesota, 56-year-old Indiana-born farmer Thaddie [Thaddeus] and his 57-year-old Indiana-born wife Permelia have been married 32 years and have had nine children, eight are living; their three youngest children are living with them, 19-year-old Minnesota-born school teacher Hattie, 17-year-old farm laborer Jesse, and 14-year-old schoolgirl Eva. Thaddeus and Jesse worked on 15 April, Hattie did not. Thaddeus owns his farm but with a mortgage.

In the 1920 US Federal Census for Ulen, Clay, Minnesota, 65-year-old Indiana-born retired farmer Thaddeus and his 67-year-old Indiana-born wife Permelia [King] McCasland have in their family their youngest children (all born in Minnesota), 34-year-old public school teacher Lillian, 29-year-old public school teacher Hattie, 27-year-old farm laborer Jesse, and 24-year-old "general merchandise" saleslady Eva. The family is living in a rented house. Everyone in the family is literate.

In the 1930 US Federal Census for Detroit Lakes, Becker, Minnesota, 77-year-old Indiana-born widow Permelia [transcribed Rome??Lia] McCasland is living with one of her unmarried Minnesota-born public school teacher daughters. I cannot identify if this daughter is Lillie or Hattie as the census taker didn't record her first name and did record her age as 30, which is an underestimate for both. [From Permelia's obit, she is living with Hattie.] This household is living in a rented house for which they pay $45 a month. Permelia was married when she was 24 years old. Permilia's father was born in Kentucky and her mother in Indiana. Miss McCasland's parents were born in Indiana. Miss McCasland worked on the last regularly scheduled work day. Both can read, write and speak English.

Mrs. Permmelia [sic] McCasland was 80-years 9-months 1-day-old when she died at her residence in Detroit Lakes, Becker, Minnesota at 4 am on15 Jun 1933 of an abscess of right lung; contributing factors were chronic bronchitis and general debility. She was attended by Dr H W Arnds [?] who attended her from 9 Jun 1933 to 15 Jun 1933. He last saw her on 14 Jun 1933. Permelia was female, white, housewife and widowed. She was born 14 Sep 1852 to John King (birthplace Kentucky) and Nancy Randall (birthplace Indiana). The informant was Lillie E McCasland of Detroit Lakes, Minnesota. Place of burial was Frazee, Minnesota on 17 Jun 1933. The undertaker was E M Bye.
