Clyde Elliott was born in Carthage, to the late Mr.
and Mrs. [William Branson] Elliott. He moved to Van
Zandt County with his father at the age of two years.
He attended school at Grand Saline and Fruitvale and
graduated from Forney High School in 1919.
He worked as deputy for Sheriff Johnson until
December 31, 1942.
He worked at North American Aircraft plant at
Grand Prairie on the plant protection force until 1943
when he returned to Van Zandt to run for the office
of sheriff. He was elected sheriff in 1944 and has
held the office ever since. He was married in 1923
at Carthage to Miss Birdie Nell Jernigan, daughter of
the late Mr. and Mrs. R. W. Jernigan. They have two
children, William Clyde Elliott, Jr., who was attending
law school at the University of Texas, until he was
recently called to active duty with the Marine Corps
as sergeant, and Joel Cason Elliott, 13, who attends
the local high school.
