Obituary posted on the Abilene Reporter-News website on March 25, 2009:

Edward Truett Compere, died at his home at Lake Brownwood on Friday, March 20, 2009. A private burial was held at Elmwood Memorial Park.

Ed was born March 6, 1921, in Abilene to Grace (Sandefer) and Truett Compere. He was the grandson of M. H. Compere who came to Abilene in 1891 and began the real estate and insurance firm of Compere & Compere. Ed's father continued the firm until his death in 1942 and in 1950, Ed took over the firm changing it into a real estate development and appraisal business. He was also the grandson of J. D. (Prexy) Sandefer, who was the president of Hardin-Simmons University from 1909 - 1939.

Ed graduated from Abilene High School and attended HSU for three years prior to joining the Coast Guard shortly after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. He was stationed out of Key West, Florida, running convoy duty along the Atlantic Coast and escorting the fleet as they returned to the U.S. from Europe. While in Florida he met Jeanne Wilson who became his bride of 63 years. After the Coast Guard service he attended and graduated from Columbia University in New York City where he and Jeanne lived until their return to Abilene in 1947.

After returning to Abilene, Ed became a building inspector for the federal government and later the developer of Brook Hollow Addition, Brook Hollow Shopping Center, and Brook Hollow Apartments. He became the first certified real estate appraiser with the MAI designation in West Texas in the early 1950's. He was president of the Abilene Board of Realtors, president of the Texas Association of Realtors in 1962, and active on many committees for the American Institute of Real Estate Appraisers. He was nationally recognized as one of the best educators and lecturers in real estate appraising and development profession.

Ed was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Tid Compere McAden.

He is survived by his wife Jeanne of Lake Brownwood, his two daughters, Susan Compere of Abilene and Jane Monroe of Lake Brownwood, his grandchildren, Jaycee Carter and husband Joe, Justin Jones and wife Channa, and Courtney Monroe all of Brownwood, and his three great-granddaughters, Carly, Carsyn, and Katie Carter also of Brownwood.
