Canby Deppen Dies At Home
August 13, 1936-Kirwin Kansan
Canby Deppen died at his home on West Liberty Street Tuesday afternoon at 4:45 p.m. He had been in bed suffering from cancer since his return from Colorado a short time ago. Mr. Deppen is an old and respected resident of this community, and we join the family in lamenting his passing.

The funeral will be held Thursday (today) afternoon with a short service at the home and burial in the Kirwin Cemetery.

Dean Deppen came home Tuesday night from Burr Oak and Ernest Deppen Wednesday for the funeral.


Obituary

Canby Norman Deppen, son of Isaac and Sarah Deppen, was born April 15, 1873, in Buchanan County, Missouri, and moved with the parental family while still a small boy to Smith County, Kansas, and later to Kirwin where he resided until his death which occurred at the home August 11, 1936.

He was married to Katie Agnes Thomas on November 15, 1896.

To this union two children were born, Minnie, who died in infancy, and Millie who still survives.

On May 18, 1900, death took the wife and mother, leaving the husband and one small daughter, Millie, who now is Mrs. Bernhard Bellville of St. Joseph, Missouri.

He was on November 24, 1908, united in marriage to Blanch Morgan. To this union six children were born:

Ralph of Montevista, Colorado
Ernie of St. Joseph, Missouri
Fred of the home
Dean of Burr Oak, Kansas
Nada, of the Home

His wife also survives. One daughter, Bessie, died February 6, 1930.

He had four brothers, Lewis, Frank, Peat and John. Lewis and Peat preceded him in death, as did one sister, Mrs. Lucy Horsman, who died January 24, 1926.

The funeral services were held at 2 p.m. August 13 at the home with Rev. R. L. Hoyt assisted by Rev. C. A. Rock, Sr. officiating.

Rev. Hoyt sang by special request. Interment was in the Kirwin Cemetery. Earl Thrasher, Jess Sherling, Fred McDowell, William Oelke, F. S. Hadley, and Owen Horsman were the pall bearers.
