The daughter of Reverend Alexander & Jane (Harry) Underwood of New Castle Co DE, late of Chester Co PA, Mary married Thomas Cooke Sep 1730 when the marriage was reported to the Londongrove Preparative Meeting. Thomas is the son of Peter Cooke & Eleanor (Norman) Cooke of Cheshire England, who had taken the voyage to America in 1713 with seven children. Father Peter and an infant brother named Samuel, died on the voyage.


Mary and Thomas were married in Chester Co PA. At the time of her marriage, they were expecting their first child, Abraham.

8-31-1730 - Londongrove Preparative Meeting informs also "ye Alexander Underwood's Daughter is with Childe by Thomas Cooke."


9-28-1730 - Wm. Swaine gives account yt he and Thos:

"Speakman was with Thos. Cooke and Alexander Underwood's Daughter and yt they seem sorry for what they have done and this meeting is informed that they are marryed."


10-26-1730 - Joseph Pennock reports that "he and William Swaine were with Thomas Cooke and wife and he appeared here with acknowledgement: Joseph Pennock to see it read at Londongrove."


12-27-1730/31: "The Women's meeting have sent in a paper to this meeting from under ye hand of Mary Cooke, condemning her evil actions. William Swaine to read at London Grove."

Mary's first husband Thomas Cook died 25 Mar 1751. Mary next married Joseph Wells before 27 May 1758, when the marriage was reported as being attended:

"At our Monthly meeting of Newgarden held the 27th of ye 5th mo : 1758 --------

Friends appointed to attend the Marriage of Joseph Wells and Mary Cook make report it was orderly accomplished."


On 1 Jul 1758, Mary Wells and her children, Isaac Cook, Mary Cook and Thomas Cook, were all received at Cane Creek Meeting from the New Garden Meeting, both in NC.


On 12 Apr 1773 Mary Wells, widowed, was granted a certificate back to New Garden Meeting.


"Mary's mother Mary Jane Harry was daughter of Hugh Harry and Elizabeth Brinton)."
