Was One of Carroll County's Most Respected Citizens; For More Than 20 Years Chairman of Republican County Committee

Carroll County lost one of its most respected and substantial citizens in the death of George Washington Alderman, which occurred at his home at Freemont Sunday night.
He was born on July 1, 1857, and was in his 86th year. He was the son of George Alderman and Thursa Dunn Alderman, and the last of a family of twelve children.

He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Nancy Martin Alderman, and the following children: Mrs. Pearl Alderman, Mrs. Andrew Gardner, John Alderman, Commonwealth Attorney for Carroll County; Mrs. Mason Webb, Mrs. Clayton Webb, Clerin Alderman, George Alderman and Miss Hannah Alderman. George Alderman, now serving in the U.S. Navy at Pensacola, Fla., was here for the funeral services.

Mr. Alderman taught school for twelve years in his early life and later became the owner of a mercantile business, in which vocation he was engaged for 35 years. For more that 20 years, he was chairman of the Republican County Committee, and in 1907, was instrumental in the organization of the Farmers Bank, Inc., at Hillsville, which later merged with Citizens Bank of Carroll to form the Carroll County Bank.

Mr. Alderman had four brothers who served in the forces of the North during the War between the States.

Funeral services were conducted at the home on Tuesday, May 4th, at 10 A.M. by Rev. A. N. Hylton and Rev. J. B. Sowers and interment in the Alderman cemetery.
