Herman was born the son of Martin and Mari Bottolfson at Paint Creek, twp Allamakee Co, Iowa, Near Waterville. He was baptised July 5, 1863 at Old East Paint Creek Lutheran Church, sponsors were: Uncle Nils Bottolfson and wife Maren Larsdtr, Johan Jacobsen and wife Anne Marie Jacobsen. It is likely the Jacobsen's immigrated with the Bottolfson family.

BOTTOLFSON Herman, NELSON Johana marriage license obtained Dec 27, 1886. Recorded in Cedar County NE court house book 2 page 45.
Johannah and Herman set up housekeeping in a log cabin on Herman's father's homestead. Their children Otto and Ina were born in the log cabin.
Helen was born in a new home that Herman built on some land that they bought.
Herman was well known for his carpenter skills and also built many barns in the area of Cedar and Dixon County NE.
He kept his farm and also his home in Maskell NE in picture perfect shape. Maskell residents said his was a show place.
He took pride in his trees and cared for them as well as he did everything else. He experimented with grafting fruit trees so there would be different kinds of fruit growing on one tree.
He was a handsome man and kept himself neat and tidy.
Herman had an endless interest in photography and was constantly photographing his family.

Children: Ina Mathilda, Otto Melvin, Helen Jeanette. Ina married Oscar Rhoden, Otto married Anna C Anderson, Helen married, Russell A. Anderson.

29 Dec 1886 - Springfield, South Dakota with Nils Nelson and Louise Bottolfsen as witnesses. Ages listed were Herman age 22 and Johannah age 18, this is incorrect, see wedding story on Johanna's memorial.
Springfield South Dakota was where they kept the church records, not the place of Individual Churches activities and ceremonies.
