My 8th great-grandmother. Parents unknown. There are many speculations and many possibilities, but no one knows for sure. One known child, Godfrey Ragsdale ~ known by the descendants as Godfrey Ragsdale II.

It is believed that she died with her husband on 'Opechancanough Day' or 'Massacre Day.' It was named for the instigator, the half brother of Powhatan, father of Pocohontas."

"Among those attacking, were the Chickahominy Indians from just across the river. Chief Arthur L. Adkins, the chief of the tribe in 1987, and also a 1977 graduate of Virginia Commonwealth University, with a master's degree, related the Indians' view of the events. The Chickahominy Indians had initially had a good relationship with the settlers, but when the English came, not to trade, but to take, the hostilities began. The massacres of 1622 and 1644 were a direct result of the encroachment of the colonists on the Indian villages ('Chickahominy Chieftan, Jerry Lewis,' Virginia Commonwealth University Magazine, Summer, 1987)."

The Ancestral File of the LDS Library, Salt Lake City, Utah has her name as Mary Cooksey. No proof though.

ANCESTRAL FAMILY HISTORY of WILLIAM CARY RAGSDALE, Vol I, From Great Britain to America, First Edition, p 1-13: "Godfrey #1 may have married John Cookney's daughter, Mary, shortly after his acquiring the 300 acres of land in 1642. However, 'It would be reasonable to assume that Mrs. Mary Ragsdale was the d/o a neighbor (such as Peter Rowlette). Godfrey #2 names his first son (Godfrey) for his father, and as was the custom, the second son, Peter, was for the mother's father, Peter. Godfrey #1's neighbors were the Peter Rowlettes. Peter Rowlette, Sr. & Jr. witness Godfrey Ragsdale #1's Will and was executor of this and other family wills later. Mary is most often used in the Rowlette family. The Rowlettes were 'Burgesses of Virginia, before 1700.' (Huguenot Records, Virginia State Library.) It seems most likely that he married Mary Rowlette."
