Bill was the youngest of four brothers. While he had a special bond with all of them, he was closest to John. They were only 1 1/2 years apart, so they grew up more like friends. When Bill was just 16 years old, his father passed away. His brother, John, was away at that time having just joined the Marines. It was a particularly difficult time for Bill. The following spring he graduated from Westport High School, in May of 1977. He signed up for a few college classes that fall, but kind of floundered for a few years. And then he met a girl (there's always a girl). Her name was Lori Ferrell. Bill fell so head over heels for her that I think it made him want to improve himself just to feel he was good enough for her. It really wasn't necessary; she was crazy about him, too. Still, Lori was a good influence and encouraged Bill to finish getting his degree.

He was attending the University of Missouri in Kansas City and engaged to Lori at the time of his death.
