From Holland St. John -" Wlliam was the second son of John "Jack" and Mary (Reed) Givens. He was born in North Carolina on October 11, 1788. He lived in Scioto County, Ohio, and possibly in Tennessee before coming to Knox County, Indiana Territory in about 1810. Knox County was later divided and Posey County was created in 1814. From Septemer 16 until November 19, 1811 he served in the Fourth Regiment, Light Infantry of the Territorial Militia. William volunteered at Vincennes and served as a private under Captain Jacob Warrick and Colonel Decker in the Battle of Tippecanoe near Lafayette, Indiana. During the battle William was "wounded bad" and was hospitalized in Vincennes for four weeks until his honorable discharge. On December 3, 1815 William married Mary (usually known as "Polly") Bird in Posey County. The couple lived on and farmed an 80-acre track west of Mount Vernon acquired from William's older brother Thomas (my ancestor). A portion of that tract has remained to the present in the ownership of descendants of William and Polly. In the June term of 1817 William served on a jury of "twelve good and lawful men." They found the defendant guilty but the verdict was appealed and that became the first appeal to the county supreme court. His brother Thomas served as an associate judge. They had eight children: John, Robert Castles, Mary R., Unity, Rebecca Belle, William H., George W. and Elizabeth Jane. William and Polly were members of the Bethel Regular Baptist Church. William died on March 28, 1842 and was buried in the Templeton Cemetery on Givens Road near his home. Polly died in 1881 and was buried next to her husband."
