Grandmother Nall’s ancestors, the Abells, came to the U.S. from England in the seventeenth century. They were Catholics, probably fleeing from religious persecution and came to Maryland, which had been founded by Lord Calvert as a Catholic colony. Later, Maryland, like many of the colonies also persecuted Catholics, and they again had to relocate or change their religion to avoid persecution. Grandmother’s branch moved to Kentucky and some later continued on to Missouri. Not all those who moved kept the faith, however, and a lot of those who stayed in Maryland did not either, so some of the Abells today remain Catholic, while others apostatized.
We are related to the Abells through both Rineys and McDaniels. The relatives on the Riney side tend to be Catholic, while those on the McDaniel side do not.
Grandmother died at the age of 33, and her widower remarried twice more.
