Samuel Songer was born in Rockingham Co., Virginia on February 8, 1801. He was an early settler in Clay County, Illinois, arriving there shortly after his marriage to Elizabeth Whitman in 1828. Songer Township was named for Songer family, numerous members which lived in that vicinity. Samuel died in Songer Township on April 6, 1874 and is buried with his wife in the Songer/Walker Cemetery.
