Margaret died when her last child Martha was 4 years old. Her husband, William Veal then took his family via New Orleans, Cuba and the Isthmas of Panama to California. He went up into the Petaluma area where he found property. However, after 4 years he decided to return to Illinois. Once there he started failing in health and doctors said that he needed the type of climate that California offered. This time he brought his family back to the Petaluma area by mule and wagon. He left Illinois in April 1865 and arrived in Petaluma in September.
