Eli Sanford Rothrock was the third of eight known children of Martin Rothrock (1814-1878) and Elizabeth (went by Lizzie) A. Rothrock (1822-1886), who married 22 Jun 1842 at Edwards County, Illinois. Martin and LIzzie were second cousins, both born in North Carolina, moved to Edwards County, Illinois with their parents, and married there and spent the remainder of their lives in the Edwards and Richland County, Illinois areas.
Eli, a lifelong farmer, married Susannah (went by Susan) Forney (1846-1922) on 04 Aug 1870 at West Salem, Edwards County, Illinois. In 1876 the family moved to a farm at Fillmore County, Nebraska. Eli and Susan were the parents of ten known children, six boys and four girls. Only five of the ten children lived to maturity. The children were namely:
1. Ira Jonas Rothrock (1872-1873)
2. Oliver Sanford Rothrock (1873-1874)
3. Amanda Ella Rothrock Saylor (1874-1912)
4. Samuel Franklin Rothrock (1877-1906)
5. Ida Elizabeth Rothrock (1879-1890)
6. Elbert Quintin Rothrock (1881-1955)
7. Edgar Eli Rothrock (1883-1945)
8. Susie Mabel Rothrock Burkholder (1884-1967)
9. Effie Catherine Rothrock (1887-1891)
10. Galen Forney Rothrock (1890-1891)
