Jimmie H. Cook passed to the Lord on March 26, 2010 on the same farm on which he was born 98 years and 4 days earlier. The son of James H. Cook and Serena (Mode) Cook, he is survived by his wife of 72 years, Veda O. Cook of Muskogee; sons Jimmy R. Cook and his special friend Susan Mohart of Muskogee and R. Jay Cook, Jr. and his wife Sandy of Muskogee. He left five grandchildren, Laura Lee Cook of Muskogee; James Christopher Cook and wife Barbara of Phoenix, AZ; Elizabeth Ann Allen and husband Shane of Muskogee; Jason Cook and wife Amy of Muskogee; R. Jay Cook and wife Malissa of Edmond; six great grandchildren; sister Serena Henson of Little Rock, AR and sister Irena Davis of Muskogee; three nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Alta Cook, brother Jacob Cook, sister Georgia Hunnicutt, brother Floyd Mode and brother Roy Mode. Jim was an automobile mechanic and operated the Main Street Garage for 44 years before retiring. A proud member of the Cherokee Nation, he was educated at the Brushy Mountain School and graduated from the Chilocco Indian Agricultural School in 1929. He worked on the family farm until WWII, when he was employed with the Griffin Grocery in the production of food rations for the war effort. Following the war, he opened the Main Street Garage and later moved to Cherokee St. Garage, he was called the "Mayor of Main Street" by his neighbors. As a member of the Cherokee Nation, he voted in every election possible until his health declined, and took great pride in residing on his mother's original allotment granted by the Dawes Commission in 1907. A member of the Lawrence Street Baptist Church and a past member of the Trinity Baptist Church, Keefeton, he was an ordained deacon and taught both Men's and Young Adult Sunday School classes. For years he never failed to attend Sunday and Wednesday night services and was always available for home visitations with the church. The Family wishes to extend thanks and appreciation to the Hometown Hospice, Dr. Lambert and to Susan Mohart, who gave special attention and love to the family during its time of need. Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Tuesday March 30, 2010 at Lawrence Street Baptist Church with Reverend Bob Shoemake and Reverend Kris Drees officiating. Burial will follow at Brushy Mountain Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be Jason Cook, R. Jay Cook, Jr., Shane Allen, Doyle Beaver, Herschel Beaver and Jeep Hunnicutt. Honorary pallbearer will be Tommy Clay. Funeral service arrangements are under the direction of Foster-Petering Funeral Home.
