Harley Wesley Barton was born Nov. 14, 1898, in Chase County to William Albert and Anna Augusta Biegert Barton. He attended Rubin School on Lyons Creek and was raised on his parents' farm in the Lyona Community. He married Hazel Sena Langvardt Aug. 22, 1923, at Kansas Falls near Junction City. He farmed in the Lyona Community until they moved into Junction City in 1950 where they owned Barton's Market until 1970. He worked for Peter Pan Grocery Store after he retired.
Harley was a lifetime member of the Lyona United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife Hazel of the home; one son, Lee Langvardt Barton of Omaha, NE; two daughters, Ada Ann Beck of Junction City, and Janet Schlegel of Denver, CO; and one brother Orville Barton of Granby, CT. He is also survived by nine grandchildren: Brenton, Barton, Jason and J.J. Harley was loved and respected by all who knew him. One of his greatest loves was the game of baseball. In his younger years, he was known as "Shorty" because of his great ability as shortstop. In his later years, he was content to watch the games on TV. He helped beautify the landscape by planting many trees which he nurtured for years.
Interment will be in the Lyona Cemetery. Memorial gifts may be made to the Lyona United Methodist Church.
