DAVENPORT -- Services to Celebrate the Life of William H. "Bill" Runge, Sr., a resident of Davenport, will be 1 p.m. Saturday, March 26, 2005, in the All Faith Chapel at the Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home, Davenport. The Rev. Doug Reynolds will officiate services.

Bill died on Thursday, March 24, 2005, at Genesis Medical Center East Campus in Davenport following a brief illness and courageous battle with cancer.

William Henry Runge was born February 22, 1923, in Lake Wilson, Minnesota, a son of Edward Richard and Etta Jane (Sabin) Runge. He was united in marriage to Vera Bernice Ullrich on April 25, 1950, in Rock Island. They would have celebrated their 55th Wedding Anniversary in April.

Bill served our Country in the U.S. Navy; he was a veteran of World War II, serving as a Boatswains Mate 2nd Class. He primarily served in the South Pacific.

He was a member of the Teamsters Local Union 371; he had driven for Rock Island Motor Transit; Central States Steel; and Smith's Transfer, retiring in 1988 from American Freight. Bill was a avid sports enthusiast and also a NASCAR fan. He dedicated much of his life to helping the young people of the area in Little League and Pony League in coaching and administration. He served as President of the Emeis Little League Association and served many years as Assistant District Administrator of District 2 of Iowa.

He cherished most the time he spent with his family; he loved his wife of 55 years, and was proud of his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was also a very talented woodworker and enjoyed the outdoors. Memorials can be made to Gilda's Club of the Quad Cities; or to Faith United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Vera; and daughters, Lizabeth (Jeff) Langston, Naperville, Ill., and Patricia "Trish" Skelley, Davenport; sons, William H. (Kathy) Runge, Jr. and Richard (Karen) Runge, all of Davenport, Scott Runge, New Liberty, Iowa, and Timothy (Stephanie) Runge, Davenport; 20 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and sisters, Carma (Harvey) Schwarz, Davenport, and Velda Arp, Eldridge, Iowa.
