T/Sgt William Jordan was assigned to the 376th Bomb Group 512th Bomb Squadron while serving in Africa. T/Sgt Jordan was a radio operator and waist gunner on a B-24D (# 41-23724)which participated in the 1 Aug 1943 bombing of the Romanian oil fields known as "Operation Tidal Wave". It was the first low level bombing of the Ploesti oil fields in Romania.
Technical Sergeant William G. Jordan's unit of assignment it is common to list the squadron, then the Group as follows: 512th Bombardment Squadron (Heavy), 376th Bombardment Group. At the time of the Ploesti Oil Field raid the 512th was stationed at Bengazi, Libya. You might add that TSgt Jordan received the Distinguished Flying Cross for this raid.

I come from a line of Jordan's descended from Henry Pierce Jordan who have been in the Darlington county and Chesterfield county area of South Carolina since at least about 1800. Some of my relatives moved to the general Edgefield in search of work in the textile mills. I spent 28 years in the United States Air Force. TSgt Jordan's unit is still active as the 512th Rescue Squadron, 58th Special Operations Wing, Kirtland Air Force Base, New Mexico.
