Vera Alena Martin Conden, went home to glory, as she watched a worship service in her home, Sunday morning, March 22, 2009.
She was born in Milford, Del., on March 12, 1918, a daughter of the late Charles and Carrie Hoyt Martin.
Vera was a loving caregiver. She cared for her sickly father in her home until his death, nursed her husband in his failing years, and came to the aid of her children's numerous childbirths. When she wasn't serving her family during their various needs, she could be found working in her yard or in her house. She was a hard worker who would only take rest to watch a Penn State or Steelers football game. As the arthritis in her knees slowed her down, she would increasingly fill her time watching political news programs. Vera loved the Lord Jesus, her family, her country and her church. She found her strength and courage in her God, Jesus Christ, and would always tell everyone she met. Although she will be greatly missed, her family has the joy in knowing that she is home and receiving her reward.
She was preceded in death by her childhood sweetheart, her husband of 55 years, Merle R. Conden, who died in 1994; a granddaughter, Crystale Leigh Barber; and a grandson, Clifford "Chip" Conden. She was a loving sister to her late brothers, Ernest, Kenneth, Charles, Walter, Albert and Elwood Martin; in addition, her late sisters, Edith Costanzo and Minnie Prutzman.
Surviving is her brother, Howard Martin, who resides in Florida. She and Merle were blessed with four children, Nelson Conden, Maryland; Marilyn Stevens, New Jersey; Linda Barber, Harveys Lake; and Sharon Jennings, Plymouth. They were further blessed with 23 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Richard H Disque Funeral Home Inc., 672 Memorial Highway, Dallas, with the Rev. James Shield of the Outlet Free Methodist Church officiating. Interment will be in the Chapel Lawn Cemetery, Dallas. Friends may call Thursday, from 10 to 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to the Kunkle United Methodist Church.
