She was the oldest of the daughters of Risden H. Bennett. She was proposed to by her cousin, John Gaston Bennett, but she refused him in favor of an Englishman, John Edwin Hill who fought in the Civil War.

Together they had four children: Elizabeth (Bettie) Ann who married James Monroe Paylor; Henry fines Hill who married Mary Jane Hudson; Benjamin (Ben) Hill who married the first time, Susan Gertrude Stickland and second, to Nezzzie Irene Smith; and John Edwin Chapman (Big Chap) who married Susan Caroline Treadaway.
