Joseph was the youngest of ten children born to John Calvin Lentz and Lydia Ann Wilbert Lentz. Before he was three years old, his father died. He attended schools in the Elizabethville area. He married Sadie Mae Kerstetter 7 June 1914 in Elizabethville. Two of their three children were born there: Meredith Clyde and Anna Kathleen. Their third child, Betty Carolyn, was born in Lancaster where the family had moved for Joseph to work with the Railroad.

Joseph was killed in a tragic train accident.
