Native of Wellford, South Carolina, graduate of Wellford-Lyman-Tucapau High School. Class of 1939 at The Citadel where he majored in Chemistry and served as a Cadet Corporal, Sergeant and 2d Lieutenant; awarded the John O. Willson Ring his senior year as the manliest, purest and most courteous member of the class, commissioned as an Infantry Officer in the U.S. Army Reserve.
He taught Chemistry at Clemson University for a year then worked for a paper company in North Carolina, he was called to active duty in January, 1942 and after training at Camp Wheeler, Georgia was assigned as a Platoon Leader with the 307th Regiment of the 77th Infantry Division. He took part in the invasions of Guam and The Philippines, during the Battle of Okinawa in 1945 he served as Commander of Bravo Company; his units medic was Corporal Desmond Doss, the Medal of Honor winner featured in the movie “Hacksaw Ridge”.
Captain Vernon was killed in action the morning following the battle for the Maeda Escarpment, he was buried in the 77th Division Cemetery on the island but his remains were repatriated to the United States in 1949.
