DR. IRVIN ABELL, FORMER HEAD OF STATE MEDICAL GROUP, DIES - Dr. Irvin Abell Jr., former president of the Kentucky State Medical Association, died yesterday at Baptist Hospital East. He was 80 years old. Abell, a retired general surgeon who lived on Overbrook Road, began practicing medicine with his father in 1936. He was president of the Kentucky State Medical Association in 1959-1960 and was head of the Jefferson County Medical Society in 1956. He was also was former president of the medical staff and the executive committee at the old St. Joseph Infirmary. Abell graduated from Yale in 1931 and the University of Louisville School of Medicine in 1935. He served as an officer in the Army Medical Corps during World War II. He also was a former director and member of the executive committee of the Kentucky Division of the American Cancer Society and a former board member of J. B. Speed Art Museum. He was a former director of the Louisville Chamber of Commerce, former chairman of the board of advisors for Nazareth College and former member of overseers of Bellarmine College. He was a member of the American College of Surgeons, Southeastern Surgical Congress, Southern Surgical Association, Kentucky Surgical Society, Louisville Country Club, Wynn Stay Club and River Valley Club. Survivors include his wife, the former Helen Edwards; a daughter, Helen A. Lucas; a son, Irvin Abell III; and two grandchildren. The funeral will be at 10 a.m. tomorrow at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, 3345 Lexington Road, with private burial. Visitation will be at Pearson's, 149 Breckinridge Lane, from 4 to 7 p.m. today. The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to Bellarmine College or the J. B. Speed Art Museum.
