J. Roland Dashiell Sr., 70, Salisbury contractor and builder, died yesterday in Peninsula General Hospital where he had been a patient one week. He had been in ill health about five years.

He was the husband of the former Miss Doris G. Disharoon and their home was at 409 W. College Ave. Their 49th wedding anniversary was Saturday.

A native of Mt. Vernon, he was the son of the late William D. and Anne Bloodsworth Dashiell.

Mr. Dashiell established the J. Roland Dashiell Co. in 1906 in Somerset County at the age of 16. He moved to Salisbury in 1925 and in 1952 he reorganized the firm to take in his six sons and his two sons-in-law. That was when the firm became known as J. Roland Dashiell and Sons, Inc. Mr. Dashiell was chairman of the board.

Many major institutions on the Eastern Shore have been built by the firm, including Deer's Head State Hospital, the new $1,000,000 wing of Peninsula General Hospital, the new junior high school, which is under construction, and the new Asbury Methodist Church on Camden Ave.

He was a member of the following: Manokin Lodge 106 of Masons, Tall Cedars of Lebanon, Boumi Temple, the Consistory of Ancient Accepted Scottish Rites, Ancient Arabic Order of the Nobles of the Mystic Shrine, Eastern Shore Shrine Club, the Modern Woodman of the World, the Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks, 817, and Knights of Pythias.

He was also a former member of the Salisbury Rotary Club. He was a member of Asbury Methodist Church and served on the official board and building committee.

Besides his wife, he leaves two daughters, Mrs. Joseph C. Brown and Mrs. Pat Boccia, and six sons, O. Woodland, J. Roland Jr., Bruce M., Russell C., Donald L., and Robert D. Dashiell. All live here.

There are two sisters, Mrs. Mattie D. Holland of Salisbury and Mrs. Ralph Powell of Princess Anne; a brother, William Dashiell of Mt. Vernon, 21 grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted tomorrow at 2 p.m. in Asbury Methodist Church by the pastor, the Rev. J. Robert Mackey. Interment will be in Parsons Cemetery.
