Russell Merrill, a resident of Longboat Key, passed away July 22, 2008.

A memorial service will begin at 9 a.m. today at Toale Brothers Funeral Home, Colonial Chapel in Sarasota. Burial will follow at the Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell.

Survivors include his wife, Eleanor; two daughters, Susan Sloan and her husband, Doug, and Sally A. Primus; a son, Dr. David Merrill and his wife, Debbie; four stepchildren, Chris Edwards and wife, Laura Ann, Byrne Edwards and wife, Mary Alice, Bridget E. Boustany and husband, Charles, and Nolan G. Edwards.

He is also survived by his grandchildren, Zachary Merrill, Kristen Primus, and J.D. and Paul Kennard; and stepgrandchildren Even and Laura Edwards, Sean and Sarah Edwards, Erik and Ashley Boustany, and Nolan John Edwards. His caring housekeeper, Patricia, will also dearly miss him.

Russell retired in 1976 from a career in the aerospace industry, where he specialized in the development of business and factory information systems. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in Europe in World War II.

Russ' true passion was art. A talented painter, Russ particularly liked oil as his medium and was equally proficient doing fine pencil portraits as oil still lifes. He and Eleanor shared many splendid times traveling the world, brushes in hand, capturing forever their memories on canvas.
