Staff Sergeant Wandtke served with the 461st Bomb Group, 765th Bomb Squadron aboard B-24E Liberator #41-28463. While on a training flight out of Hammer Field, Fresno, California, the bomber crashed in Kings Canyon National Park. The plane and it's crew of six were missing until the wreck was discovered by geologists on July 17, 1960.
His father was Arnold Edwin Karl Wandtke, who died on May 6, 1938.
