The eldest lost at Farmville and perhaps the last military hero of the 26th Michigan to make the ultimate sacrifice in battle for his country was William Wheeler. At Cumberland Church, Company I. lost William H. Wheeler, of Woodland, Barry County, then about 40 years old, who had provided an on-going diary of his Civil War experiences. Wheeler had enlisted on August 12, 1862, and was killed in action at Farmville, Virginia on April 7, 1865, just days before Lee would surrender the Army of Northern Virginia. It was a devastating loss for his family and his notes are a lasting memory of his bravery. At the time, Albert H. Wheeler of Dayton, age 34, was serving in Co. G. of the 26th Michigan as a Wagoner. Albert had been wounded at Spotsylvania but survived the war and mustered out at Alexandria on June 4, 1865.
