Col. Mortimer B. Birdseye, 75, retired Army officer of 2115 Cowper Dr., died Saturday Morning after suffering a heart attack in Downtown Raleigh. A native of New York, he and his wife had lived in Raleigh since his retirement in 1945.
Col. Birdseye entered the Army Reserves in 1906 and was promoted to captain at ROTC at Fort Niagara in 1917. He entered teh regular Army in 1922 and was a 1929 Graduate of Quartermaster Corps in Philadelphia, PA.
In 1942, he became commander of the A.S.F. Depot in Seattle, Washington and in that post was awarded the Legion of Merit.
Besides his wife, Col. Birdseye is survived by a son, Lt. Col. M.B. Birdseye Jr., of El Paso, Texas; a daughter, Mrs. William A. Smith of Rockville, MD; and eight grandchildren.
