Chief Master Sergeant Herman G. Benton USAF retired, passed away on Friday, September 23, 2005 from complications of a fall. He is preceded in death by his son Glenn Garrison Benton; his parents Herman George Benton and Beatrice Fern Garrison Benton; sister Glenna and; brother Philip Benton. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Eileen McKernan Benton; daughter and son-in law, Sharon and Charles Papp; brother and sister-in law, Richard and Emiko Benton; daughter-in law, Barbara Benton Jennings; four grandchildren, Roger, Kenneth and Katherine Papp and Christina Benton; five great-grandchildren, Stephany, Chase, Kacee, Devin and Darian. Herman will be greatly missed by numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Herman Glenn or "HG" as he was known to most of us, was born in Salina, KS., On February 8, 1919. He pursued many occupations from farming, roustabout in the oil fields to a small business owner, but he was most proud of the 23 years of service to his country beginning with the US Army Air Corp then the United States Air Force as a flight engineer. He served in WW II, the Berlin Airlift, Korean Conflict, and early Vietnam. Herman is the eighth generation of an American Veteran Family that included his brother, son, son-in-law, grandson and nephews following this proud family tradition. A memorial service will be held on Friday September 30, 2005 at the VFW Post 5890, 76 Unser Blvd, Rio Rancho, NM., at 2:00 p.m. Interment will be at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia at a later date.
