Amos was born about 1761 and died before Oct. 24, 1826. His surname was often spelled Laning.

He was the son of Lt. Ralph Laning of Captain Hunt's Company, First Regiment, Hunterdon Militia, a scout and guide to Gen. George Washington during the Revolutionary War. His mother was Mary Hart Laning.

He married Lois Reed. They had nine children: William in 1779, Sarah about 1780, Amos Jr. about 1782, Elizabeth in 1783, Ralph in 1785, Jasper in 1790, and Hezekiah, Foster and Rebecca, whose birth years are unknown.

He was listed as a member of the Pennington Presbyterian Church in 1822. It is assumed, but not confirmed, that he was buried in the church cemetery.
