Wendell Windecker 1917-1999

Wendell Windecker, 81, of Alida, died Monday, June 28, 1999, at the MeritCare Hospital in Fargo, North Dakota.

He was born November 6, 1917, in Hardin Co., Iowa, the son of Chester Arthur and Helen (Lathrop) Windecker. He grew up in Robertson, Iowa, and graduated from Iowa Falls High School in 1936. He attended a year of college at Iowa Falls Community College. Wendell worked on the family farm and did carpentry work. In 1941 he served in the U.S. Army Air Corps as a pilot. He flew many low altitude missions over enemy lines in the European theater. During World War II, Lt. Windecker saw over 500 combat days.

He married Ada Patterson on November 16, 1947 in Iowa Falls, Iowa. In 1949 they moved to Alida, Wendell worked as a heavy equipment operator on road construction.

Wendell was a member of the Alida Lutheran Church, International Brotherhood of Operating Engineers Local 49, and the American Legion.

Survivors include his wife, Ada; two daughters, Joleen (David) Mittelholtz of Coralville, Iowa, and Lynne Barke of Radcliff, Kentucky; three sons, Perry (Barb) Windecker of Shevlin, Kelly (Karen) Windecker of Bemidji, and Kevin Windecker of Colorado Springs, Colorado; 20 grandchildren; and 17 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Leonard and Willard.

Funeral services are Friday, July 2, 1999 at 2 p.m. at the Alida Lutheran Church in Alida, with Rev. Lyle Twite officiating. Visitation is Thursday, July 1 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Cease Family Funeral Home in Bagley with a family service at 7 p.m. and one hour prior to the services at the church. Interment will be at the Alida Cemetery in Alida. Full Military Rites will be accorded by members of the Irvin Blix American Legion Post No. 16 of Bagley.
