OBITUARY - Plain Dealer, Wabash (IN)

Donald M. Alger, 86, Wabash, died at 5:30 p.m. Friday, May 1, 2009, at Miller's Merry Manor West in Wabash.

He was born April 22, 1923, in Wabash, to Kenneth and Katherine (Thomas) Alger.

Don was a 1942 graduate of Wabash High School. He married Margaret Ann "Marge" Ross in Wabash on July 13, 1946; she died Nov. 30, 2008.

He worked his entire life at the Wabash Plain Dealer starting as a newspaper carrier and retired as the production department manager in 1985. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Hanna Masonic Lodge and was a life member of the Elks Lodge, all of Wabash. He was a volunteer driver for Meals on Wheels, and also was an usher at the Honeywell Center many years. Don loved to golf and was an avid bridge and euchre player. He also loved sports, especially the Indianapolis Colts and Purdue University.

He is survived by a son, Donald Robert "Rob" (Donna) Alger, Valdosta, Ga.; one daughter, Katherine "Katie" (Randy) Retherford, Fort Wayne; a son-in-law, Joe Nahler, Mt. Juliet, Tenn.; seven grandchildren, Dr. Kiersa (Kevin) Durfee, Arcadia, Fla., Travis (Shannon Lashbrook) Nahler, Fegersheim, France, Donald Robert "Chip" Alger II, Valdosta, Ga., Rachel Retherford, Fort Wayne, Chase Alger, Valdosta, Ga., Ross Retherford, Fort Wayne, Dalton Tomlinson, Valdosta, Ga.; and great-grandchildren, Kaleb and Kyra Durfee, Arcadia, Fla. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Maridon "Mickey" Nahler, and two brothers, Kenneth "Kenny" Alger and Robert "Bob" Alger.

Funeral services will be held at Grandstaff-Hentgen Funeral Service, 1241 Manchester Ave., Wabash, on Sunday, May 31, 2009, at 2 p.m. Pastor David Cross will officiate. Burial will be in Falls Cemetery, Wabash. Friends may call at the funeral home from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday, May 30, 2009. Memorials may be made to the Miller's Merry Manor West Activities Fund, 1720 Alber St., Wabash.
