Stephen was the 7th generation of FitzRandolphs born in Piscataway, being the grandson of Lewis FitzRandolph & Rachel Snowden; and gr-grandson of Emphraim FitzRandolph and Rachel Stelle. He was a direct descendant of this family's patriarch, Edward FitzRandolph (ca. 1615-1684)of Nottinghamshire, England whose family settled in Barnstable, MA in 1630, but later come to Piscataway, NJ in 1669, fleeing the religious oppression of Massachusetts. On his mother's side, he was the maternal grandson of Daniel Stanbury and Elizabeth Snell of New York City.
Little is known about his life, as he died young. When he was 23 years old, he married 22-year old Letitia Moore of New Brunswick, daughter of wealthy merchant, Alexander Moore. The couple settled in New Brunswick, and would become parents to 5 known children (4 girls/1 boy): Mary FitzRandolph (1838-1843), Cornelia M. FitzRandolph (1840-1905), Almria FitzRandolph (1841-1852), and Stephen FitzRandolph Jr. (1845-1871).
Stephen died in 1846. He was only 32 years old. His young widow never remarried and would raise their children until her death some 47 years later in 1893. She would bury 4 of her children before her death.
None of his children married, and all are buried here. Mary FitzRandolph predeceased her father, passing in 1843 at age 15. Almira passed next in 1852 at age 11. Stephen Jr. passed in 1871 at age 26. Eliza survived until 1882, passing at age 40. Cornelia, who was the last surviving member of the family, died in 1905 at age 65.
