John C. Blake.
GALESBURG, Mich., Nov. 19.-(Special)—At the hospitable home in Comstock, across the threshold of which he had welcomed so many a coming and speeded so many a parting guest, John C. Blake died at 2 o'clock this morning, aged 68 years.
Mr. Blake had suffered for several years from heart trouble and his condition had many times been regarded as critical.
A little more than a week since he submitted to an operation for cataract, which, while successful in itself, so affected his enfeebled nervous system as to aggravate the heart difficulty, and death resulted.
Mr., Blake was a natural farmer. He loved to see crops grow and for all dumb creatures he had a genuine affection. To see them well cared for was his delight and the cultivation of these tastes brought him not only personal gratification but gave him an extended reputation as a farmer and stock dealer.
He was eminently social in his character and to be surrounded by his children and kindred was his highest pleasure, and it was an enjoyment that came to him frequently, as no week passed but that some assemblage of friends and relatives gathered at the great farm house. On these occasions Mr. and Mrs. Blake were always the central figures.
He leaves an enviable record, and if life's successes are to be measured by the manner in which its duties are performed, if examples of enterprise and fair dealing are of value to the world, then all who knew him will inherit something from Mr. Blake.
Beside his death bed were those he loved best, all the children, the only brother and sister and many others endeared to him by the ties of a lifetime.
It was as he would have wished. Besides his widow two sons and four daughters survive. William I. and John R., of Comstock. Mrs. Porter Hull of Delphas, Kansas, Mrs. Henry Sherwood of Pavilion, Mrs. F. C. Burroughs of this village and Blanch, residing at home.
Mr. Blake and his sons have been large shippers and growers of sheep and stock.
In politics he was a staunch Democrat. He was postmaster of Galesburg four years, justice of the peace four years and had held other offices. He was a Mason. The funeral will be hold Monday morning at 10 o'clock from the house. Kalamazoo Daily Telegraph November 19, 1897 page 5

John C. and William A. Blake came from Livingston Co., N.Y., the former in 1848, the latter three years later. They have improved large portions of wild lands, and are among our largest and most enterprising farmers. The former has a beautiful farm residence, with very convenient farm buildings. He has of late years, alone or in conjunction with his brother, William A., been largely engaged in buying and shipping stock. They are men of thought and careful reading, and what they gather from books or experience they put to practical use in their vocation.
