1923 - 2010

Thelma Bunyett Johnson passed away peacefully on February 24, 2010, in Pensacola, Florida, after a brief illness. Born in St. Landry, Louisiana, on February 7, 1923, the youngest of seven children, she relocated to Pensacola after World War II with her Army veteran husband, L.D. Johnson. Her husband predeceased her in 1959 and she began a 34-year career with Gayfer's Department Store, where she made lifelong friends who have loved and prayed over her these last few weeks.
She is survived by her daughter, Linda Susan Johnson Cummings and son-in-law, Walter James Cummings of Virginia Beach, VA; grandchildren, Robbie Cash and husband, David, of Little Rock, AR, Richard Cummings of Jacksonville, FL, Karen Llano and husband, Alfonso, and Amy Cummings of Virginia Beach, VA; great-granddaughter, Lyndsey Murray and twin great-grandsons, Brayden and Cameron Cash of Little Rock, AR; a sister- and brother-in-law, Cecelia and Wells Kennedy of Pensacola, FL; a nephew, Jerry LaFleur, who had become like a son to her; niece, Judi Schultz, who will officiate the service; and niece, Elaine Hoffman of Pensacola, FL; and many other nieces and nephews in the Pensacola area and Louisiana.
Raising her only child as a single parent, Thelma took great pride in her daughter's adult accomplishments in music, business, and child-rearing.
A memorial service will be held at at Oak Lawn Funeral Home in Pensacola on Saturday, February 27, 2010 at 3:30pm with visitation beginning at 2:30pm. Committal services will be held on Monday, March 1, 2010 at Barrancas National Cemetery, NAS Pensacola, at 10:15am with procession leave leaving Oak Lawn at 10am.
