James P. Phelps, 90, died Wednesday evening at Green Valley Care Center in New Albany. He was born June 21, 1919 in West Van Lear, KY to his parents Lee A. Phelps and Virgie (Honeycut) Phelps. While in high school James worked for the Department of Agriculture measuring farm land. While attending the University of Kentucky he met and married Lucille Stevens who was attending Transylvania University. James was called up for his stint in the army. He was attached to headquarters of the famous 800 M.P. Battalion that was among the first to occupy Japan at wars end. He then traveled with a seed company and was with the old Bacon's Department Store for many years.A longtime member of Culburtson Baptist Church in New Albany he taught Sunday school adult classes and was active in church work.

He is survived by:

Wife: Lucille (Stevens) Phelps New Albany, IN

His daughters: Sandra Lee Schnell New Albany, IN Michelle Wiseman and husband David Bowling Green, KY

Grandchildren: 4

Great-Grandchildren: 7

Visitation will be from 2-6 PM Sunday at Seabrook, Dieckmann & Naville Funeral Homes (1119 E. Market St., New Albany, IN).

Funeral services will be held 11 AM Monday at the Market St. Chapel Burial will be in SCI-Graceland Memorial Park, New Albany, IN
