Adeline "Addie" was born August 31, 1890. She always said she was a gay 90's girl. She was born in Cope, Orangeburg County, South Carolina. When her older brothers died, her father pulled her from the house, to work in the fields with him. She always said she was raised like a boy, and never learned the women's work of keeping house.
She met my grandfather,Henry Darnell, when he came to work on her father's farm as a young man. He said he had to wait till she grew up before he could marry her. She would not marry him untill after he helped her father get in the crops that year.
My grandmother was a farmer, and worked in the cotton mills. She learned how to sew, and made many of her granddaughters cloths when they were little. We called her "Mippy", (I don't know why), as did most of the children in the neighborhood.
She worked hard, and if she ever had a cross word for someone, I didn't hear of it. She always had time for us grandchildren.
She died in her sleep that last night, with her Bible opened on the bed beside her. They said it looked as if she had been reading her Bible, and just closed her eyes to rest. I know she is resting in Heaven now.
Mippy was a very very special grandmother, and we loved her a lot. She is greatly missed.
She died May 16, 1971, at her residence in Grovetown, Ga. Survivors include two sons; Allen Darnell and Amos Darnell.
Grandchildren were, Aubrey Leland, Barbara Ruth, Billie Ann, Brenda Virginia, Linda Katherine, Ray Allen, Amos Gary, Deborah Jean.
