Corp Helms, Company D, 1st Battalion, 32nd Infantry Regiment, 7th Infantry Division, was initially reported Missing in Action, while fighting enemy forces in the area of the Chosin Reservoir on December 2, 1950. On December 31,1953, his status was changed to presumed Killed in Action Remains Not Recovered. He was awarded the Purple Heart & Combat Infantry Badge. Helms' name was inscribed on the Courts of the Missing.

Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) announced that U.S Army Corporal Henry L. Helms, 24, of Collbran, Alabama, killed during the Korean War, was accounted for April 16, 2020.
