Patrick Peter Small was a coachman at Huntly Castle, Longforgan, Scotland, and also a local innkeeper. His parents' names are unknown, but they are not William Small and Margaret Keir. Their son went by Patrick Small-Keir and was born much later than Patrick Peter Small.

In 1819, Patrick Peter fathered a son with a teenage girl named Betty Rodgers. After confessing his guilt, he was forced to pay a fine for both of them. (The court records can be found online.) It is unknown if he ever had any involvement in his son William's life.

Patrick Peter married Isabel Rattray four months after William's birth. They had two daughters together: Ann Augusta Small (born c. 1826, married John McClaren) and Isabella Rattray Small (born about the same time).
