Funeral services for the late John A Erickson, who died at his home in Oakland last Thursday, Aug 28, 1947, at the age of 85 years, five months and 17 days, were held Sunday afternoon at the West Side Methodist Church, with the pastor, Rev Woodrow Leypoldt, in charge.
A mixed quartet composed of Mrs Walter G Johnson, Mrs Floyd Erickson, Ed J Nelson and Vernor Anderson sang three numbers. Mr Erickson's five sons, together with the son-in-laws, Arthur G Peterson, B L Herbert and W A Nelson, Jr., served as pallbearers. Burial was made in the West Side Methodist Cemetery, with Palmquists in charge.
Out of town persons attending the services were Mrs August Molander and Mrs and Mrs Edward Nelson of Ault, Colo., Mr Wm Nelson of Purcell, Colo., Mr and Mrs Frank Nelson of Carroll, Mr and Mrs Herbert Nelson of Plattsmouth, Mr and Mrs Frank Nelson of Des Moines, Iowa, Harry Nelson of Ansley, Gust Wennerberg, Mrs Carl Hallberg and Mr and Mrs George Erickson of Omaha and Knox Pearson of Davenport.
A resident of Oakland vicinity since 1890, John Arthur Erickson son of Eric and Louise Erickson was born in Östergötland Sweden on March 11, 1862. He came to the United States at the age of nine years and spent his youth at Orion, Illinois.
In 1883 he came to Nuckolls County, Nebraska, which was his home for seven years. He moved to Oakland in 1890, settling in the West Side community, where he continued to farm until ill health forced his retirement in 1944. He and Mrs Erickson had since resided in Oakland.
On April 3, 1895, he was united in marriage to Emma Sophia Nelson of Oakland. Ten children, all of whom survive were born to the couple.
Mr Erickson had been a member of the West Side Methodist Church since 1893.
Besides his wife, he is survived by five sons, Walter of West Point, Wesley, Earl, Francis and Arthur of Oakland; and five daughters, Mrs Arthur G Peterson and Mrs W A Nelson, Jr of Oakland, Mrs Martin Fredstrom of Turlock, California, Mrs B L Herbert of Council Bluffs, Iowa and Miss Elna Erickson of Chicago, Illinois. There are also 16 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
