Groves was born near Leonard in Fannin County. At the age of 18, he was converted and joined the Cumberland Presbyterian Church.
He was united in marriage to Nancy Margaret Braley on 30 November 1887 at Fannin County, Texas. To this union, seven children were born: six boys and one girl. She preceded him in death in 1905.
Joseph Lewis Groves married May Boyle on 25 December 1907. To this union were born five children - thee daughters and two sons.
After moving from Fannin County in 1888, Mr. Groves moved to Archer County where he lived until 1893 when he came to Olney and the area. He lived near Jean when he purchased a small tract of land until 1900 when he moved to the Hunt community. In 1902, he purchased his property in the Jean community. He was a successful farmer, a good neighbor and an upright citizen.
One of the seven sons of the pioneer of Texas settler, E.S. Groves of Fannin County. Five of the seven brothers were early settlers in and around Olney, They were: John W. Smith, Joe, Will and Henry Groves. The other two brothers - Bob and George were frequent visitors to Olney.
Survived by his wife; children of his first marriage - Burl Groves of Lovington, NM, Lewis Groves of Sulphur, OK, Ralph Groves of Floydada, Verma Groves and Casper Groves, both of Dallas; children of his second marriage - Mrs. Karr of Archer City, Morris Groves of Lovington, NM, Gladys Groves of Jean, Bill Groves of Jean; his brothers - W.S. Groves of Olney, George F. Groves of Leonard; 11 grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers were six nephews - Carl Wilkerson of Leonard, Virgil Douglass of Westover, Lem Groves and Bill Groves of Jean, Mont Groves and Gerald Groves of Olney.
One son, Walter Lee Groves, his oldest son, was killed 24 September 1918 at Niedersachsen, Germany during World War I.
