Velma Lee Boutroue, 81, of Saratoga died Sunday, April 7, 2002 surrounded by family and friends at Memorial Hermann Baptist Hospital in Beaumont. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, April 10, 2002 at 1:00 P.M. at Broussard's in Kountze, with Reverend David Alleau officiating. Internment will follow at Old Hardin Cemetery in Kountze. A gathering of family and friends will be held today Tuesday, April 9, 2002 from 5:00 until 9:00 P.M. at the mortuary. A native of Saratoga, she lived in Hardin County many years. Mrs. Boutroue attended Saratoga High School where she was a cheerleader and sponsor of the football team. She played baseball, volleyball and basketball. Velma graduated from Saratoga High in 1938. Mrs. Boutroue graduated from Hotel Dieu with a degree in nursing in 1941. Her career as a nurse spanned fifty-two years. She was a Lieutenant in the United States Army during WWII and was stationed at Fort Polk, Louisiana. Velma was also a member of the Good Shepherd Baptist Church in Silsbee. She was preceded in death by her four sisters, Martha Laird, R.E. Hall, I.V. Cotten and Zelma Vaughn. Mrs. Boutroue is survived by two daughters, Patricia Wilson of Plano and Vicki Connell and her husband Jeff of Beaumont; son, Mike Holzapfel and his wife Cassie of Silsbee; brothers, James Bass of Bay City and Jack Bass of Lake Jackson; seven grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren.
