Charles enlisted in Co. "I" - 38th Iowa Vol. on 9 Aug. 1862 at New Oregon, Iowa at the beginning of the Civil War. 01 Jan. 1865 - the 34th & 38th were Consolidated. He became a member of Co. "F" 34th Iowa Vol. Was mustered out - 15 Aug. 1865 at Houston, Texas.
He re-enlisted in Co. 'A' - 21st U.S. Infantry on 25 Oct. 1870 at Madison, Wisconsin. Was assigned to Camp Apache, Arizona in Oct. 1871 and was discharged from Camp Harney, Oregon on 25 Oct. 1875.
