FUNERAL SERVICES OF LATE MRS. JANET STUART, whose death occurred Staurday evening, March 10th, 1928 at her home in this city were held Tuesday afternnon at the Presbyterian Church with Rev. John C. Knox officiating. The many present and the floral tributes bespoke the affection and respect in which the deceased was held.
Janet Hutton Stuart was born in Sterling, Scotland in 1841 and was a descendent of the noted Scotch poet, Robert Burns. Her mother was Margaret Burns and father John Hutton. She was reared in the Presbyterian Church of Scotland and continued as a member throughout her life. Her mother died in Scotland. As a young woman she came to America with her older brothers and resided for a time in Lanesboro where she married in 1873 to Duncan Stuart. The came to Pipestone County as pioneer settlers in 1878.
Of the children born to Mr. and Mrs. Stuart, two are now living, Earl T. Stuart of Wilmot, S D and Mrs. Laura Stuart Brown of Pipestone County. The children who preceded the mother in death were Mrs. Margaret Burns McGillivary, Mrs. Jennie Stuart Duea and Norman Stuart. Among the mourners are the children of Duncan Stuart of a previous marriage; D.M. Stuart of Portland, Oregon, Mrs. Mary Stuart Harrison of St. Paul and Mrs. Jessie Stuart Buell of Oelwein, Iowa. Fifteen grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren remain together with the numerous other relatives and friends to cherish the memory of this pioneer woman.
The late Mrs. Stuart was a faithful and devoted member of the Frist Presbyterian Church of Pipestone from the time of its organization until her death. The records show that when the meeting was held in October 1878 at which steps were taken to organize this church, Mr. and Mrs. Duncan Stuart were both signers of the petition.
Burial was in the Old Woodlawn Cemetery, beside her husband.
