FLORENCE | Elizabeth Holliday Allen Padgett, 64, died Thursday, Nov. 14, 2002, at home after an illness.

She was born Aug. 19, 1938, at McLeod Infirmary in Florence, the first-born daughter of Edwin Marshall Allen Jr. and the late Elizabeth Holliday Allen.

She was a member of First Baptist Church for many years. She was the great-granddaughter of Julia Marshall and James Allen, one of the founding fathers of Florence, and the granddaughter of Flora Johnson and George Judson Holliday of Galivants Ferry.

She graduated from Florence High School in 1956 and the University of South Carolina in 1960, where she was a member of Delta Delta Delta sorority and Beaux Arts. Upon completion of her degree in education, she taught elementary school in the Richland County School District, where she was elected Teacher of the Year during her first year in the profession.

In 1961, she married Clyde Talmadge Padgett Jr. of Florence. After his graduation from dental school in Richmond, Va., the couple made their home in Florence and joined Central Methodist Church.

She loved her home and her garden. She earned Master Gardener certification and enjoyed sharing her passion with the friends and family for whom her garden became a haven. She was a delightful storyteller, quick to tell the witty tales that made every visitor to her home feel more cheerful for having spent time with her.

Survivors, in addition to her father and husband, include three children, Celeste Blackwell Allen Padgett Kahn and Clyde Talmadge Padgett III, both of Florence, and Edwin Allen Padgett of Tryon, N.C.; four grandchildren, David Alan Kahn Jr., Celeste Marshall Allen Kahn, Clyde Talmadge Padgett Kahn and Katherine Elizabeth Padgett; a brother, Edwin Marshall Allen III of Florence; a son-in-law, David Alan Kahn; a daughter-in-law, Ashley Burdette Padgett; and two sisters-in-law, Frances Smith Padgett Farmer and Jean Almand Daniel Allen, both of Florence.

She was predeceased by her sister, Celeste Blackwell Allen.
