RALPH WALLACE MCCANON
Ralph Wallace McCanon was born Dec 22, 1899, in York, Nebr., the son of Mr. and Mrs. M. H. McCanon, and passed away Feb. 23, 1957, in Chariton, Iowa.
Ralph attended school in Oskaloosa and Chariton and was graduated from the Chariton high school in 1918.
He united with the Chariton Christian church as a young man, and was active in Christian work throughout his life. He served as a member of the Christian church board in Chariton for many years and was the secretary of the board at the time of his death.
On Sept. 3, 1922, Ralph was united in marriage to Miss Margaret E. Best. With the exception of a few years in Des Moines, they have made their home in Chariton where they have a host of good friends and kind neighbors.
Ralph served as choir director for the church for many years and led the singing for the Bible school whenever called upon. His wonderful singing voice will live in the minds of people in Chariton as long as memory lives. His contribution of talent to unnumbered funeral services will never be forgotten.
Ralph was a loyal member of the Layman's League Christian Women's Fellowship of the church, and he served as the president for many years. He served for years as a deacon in the Christian church and served faithfully on the centennial committee in 1956.
Two weeks ago Sunday Ralph sang in a duet in a special service when a Drake divinity school speaker was present. He never failed to respond when called upon. A week ago he was absent for the first time in many months from the L.L.C.M.F. We knew then that something was wrong.
Ralph is survived by his wife, Peggy, and his only brother, the Rev. Rupert Lysle McCannon, Chaplain of the Excelsior Springs Hospital, Excelsior Springs, Mo.
Services were held at the Beardsley Funeral Home Wednesday, Feb. 27, and interment was in the family plot with his parents in the Chariton cemetery. The whole community mourns the passing of this good citizen.
