He was married to Evelyn Trent Van Meter 1896-1964, daughter of Solomon Lee Van Meter 1859–1928 and his first wife Evaline Trent "Evie" Swoope (pronounced swope) 1864–1899.
Brownell was a thoroughbred racing judge and at one time the owner of a Packard car dealership.
Brownell and his mother, Louise, died of pneumonia on the same day in 1934. He left a widow and two young daughters, they were:
