He was born in Bohlenberge, Germany and left home in 1857 at age 20 to come to the United States. He went to Eureka, Ill. where he worked on a farm, then enlisted in the Union Army along with his brother Gerhard. He served in several major battles and was on guard duty the night President Lincoln was assassinated. Following the service, he returned to Illinois and married Helena Philippi. They lived on a farm near El Paso, Ill., where he raised pure bred Percheron draft horses. Later the family moved to Nebraska in order to be near other family members. Children surviving infancy were: Herman F. (b. 1868), William (b. 1870), Friedrich A. (b. 1872) Frank L. (b. 1874), Dorothea (b. 1877) Margaretha (b. 1879), and George C. (b. 1881). He died at Bruning, Ne.
