DEATH OF JUDGE WATERS
END COMES TO RESPECTED CITIZEN EARLY TODAY

Continued Active in Business Up to Very Last - Came to Southwest Missouri in 1970

Judge W. H. Waters, well known and one of Carthage's most respected citizens, died at 1:15 o'clock this morning at his home 117 North Fulton street. Death was caused by a general breakdown due to his advanced age. He was 78 years old.
Mr. Waters had been in poor health for several months. His indomitable willpower and determination to keep going had much to do with his being able to continue to conduct his business affairs until within the last week.
Took to His Bed Yesterday
A week ago today Judge Waters was out riding and up town. He took to his bed only yesterday noon. Physicians announced at that time that the end was only a question of a few hours or possibly days.
Judge Waters was a pioneer resident and stock man of this district. He was born near Harper's Ferry, VA., September 6, 1840. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Waters moved to Sangamon county, IL., where he was reared. Judge Waters was a personal friend of President Lincoln, Governor Palmer and John A. McClelland in the Civil War period, before coming to Missouri.
In 1870 he came to Barton county and for several years operated a stock farm six miles northwest of Jasper buying and shipping animals to market on a large scale.
Moved to Carthage in 1883
In the spring of 1883 Mr. Waters moved his family to Carthage. For several years he engaged in the implement business here, also operating a similar store at Lamar. Since disposing of his implement business he has given his attention to real estate and loan business, in which he had been engaged for the last 15 years. He owned several pieces of property in Carthage and had some interests in Webb City, only recently having discontinued trips to that city to look after his affairs. He erected the Waters business block on the west side of Main street between Second and Third streets, which he owned at the time of his death.
Mr. Waters received his title of "judge" by serving one term as county judge in Barton county. He was county administrator for Jasper county for one term about ten years ago. Since quitting that office he has been administrator for many estates and it is said that he probably had charge of settling of more estates than any other person in the county.
Active in Many Enterprises
He was active in many affairs and enterprises in Carthage. for years he had been a prominent worker in the Methodist Episcopal church and was a member of the building committee that had charge of the erection of the present First M. E. edifice here. He was a teacher in the Sunday school and an officer in the church for 30 years, continuously, only giving up his work when compelled to do so because of failing health.
When the old Y.M.C.A. organization - before the days of the present association - had its rooms over the R. H. Rose Mercantile Company's store, Judge Waters served as president. He also was head of the Charity Union here for a number of years in earlier days. At one time he was the vice president of the Carthage National Bank but some years ago sold his stock in that institution.
Mr. Waters was married twice. In 1862 he wedded Miss Louise Johnson in Illinois. She died in 1882 and two years later Mr. Waters went to Weyanwega, Wisconsin where he was married to Miss Sophie Richie. The widow and the following children survive: Mrs. A. W. Beamer of Lamar and C. F. Waters of Imperial, CA., children by the first marriage: A. R. Waters of Kansas City, W. H. Waters, Jr. of Jasper, Lieut.
